Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard: what these categories mean and what determines which you land in.
Term life rates from different carriers reflect a rate class system. While terminology differs slightly between companies, the standard tier structure is: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Premium Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with additional ratings for elevated risk. Tobacco users occupy a separate, higher-priced class ladder.
What underwriters look at
Physical measurements (height and weight), blood pressure and cholesterol readings, family history of cardiovascular or cancer events before age 60, driving violations, medication history, your profession and recreational activities, and nicotine or tobacco product use. Perfect scores on most or all of these support the highest classification; Preferred allows for minor variations; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed conditions like treated high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health question asks you to self-assess your status: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your quote will reflect this tier; the carrier verifies the actual tier following underwriting. If you're uncertain, submit quotes at two different health levels and compare; the application will allow the carrier to make the final determination. Inflating your health status won't reduce the final cost—it only makes your estimate less accurate.
Susman Insurance Agency can help identify carriers whose underwriting guidelines are most favorable for your specific circumstances—this choice often impacts your rate more than the baseline price.
