Downtown El Cajon has been revitalized through efforts by the Downtown El Cajon Association and Business Improvement District, which organize community gatherings and maintain public spaces. The heart of downtown is Centennial Plaza and Amphitheater, an open gathering space that hosts concerts, festivals and community events throughout the year. Arts Alley features public murals and gallery spaces; the Olaf Wieghorst Museum, known for its Western heritage collections, and the Knox House Museum are nearby cultural anchors.
The neighborhood hosts regular events including Music on Main concert series, the annual Alley Cat Art Fest in September, and seasonal celebrations. The downtown association also organizes Cajon Cruise and holiday events. These gatherings bring residents together across the many communities that live in El Cajon, and draw visitors from across the county.
